This is a tough record, but also an extremely interesting one that shows how cathartic, draining and emotionally intense the musical experience can be. Black Dresses is a duo comprised by Ada Rook and Devi McCallion, and this is their second full-length release. S Best EPs of 2018 list, with the duo also featuring in the publication's list of best new artists. Their latest, LOVE AND AFFECTION, can be just as jarring as their past work, but there’s also more melodicism here, less noise freak-outs and a lot of tender moments in between the chaos. It’s world-weary and searching, Rook and McCallion’s increasingly deft production skills allowing more space and breathing room for some truly gorgeous moments to unfold.
And it's that aspect which makes it hard to review. There're various reasons why someone might not like this album. Blunt expressions of trauma will inevitably be a PTSD trigger for some and otherwise upsetting or uncomfortable for others. And of course some people are bigots but their opinions don't count. She has been a member of several side-projects over the years, including "The Various Endeavors?", where she was listed as an official member of the band. She produced/co-produced most of the band's music from 2007 to 2010 and is seen pictured/depicted in promotional artwork on their bandcamp page.

Honestly, it’s really difficult trying to articulate specific thoughts about this record and I feel like the best way to try to communicate the music is by giving broad strokes of how this project feels as a whole. But as I listen to it again it’s possibly one of my favorites of all time. Probably the most refined effort by Ada Rook and Devi McCallion. Every song here is just incredibly expressive, nice to listen to, and even funny at times. The writing and delivery here feels so authentic and well processed. Ik the tape itself doesnt look different but iicr the edition 1 tapes are just a 3 panel with the backside being the pattern continued with credits. Anyone whos got it, up for scanning at all? I believe this store caters to the younger crowd. Nice store for the young girls on a limited budget. Don't use this space to complain about the average rating, chart position, genre voting, others' reviews or ratings, or errors on the page. Jokes are fine, but don't post tactless/inappropriate ones. It is also a record that, I feel, kind of encapsulates much of the societal and emotional struggles of our generation.

Musically, the album contains elements of noise, pop, industrial, industrial metal, experimental music, and internet genres such as chillwave and vaporwave. The vocals on the album vary between screaming and sing-rapping. It explores themes such as finding friendship through times of hardship and pain, resilience and hope, identity, depression, and body horror. The thing about this album is that it feels like the best of everything I love about the band. The industrial guitars on 'MUTATIONS', the hyper-sweet lyrics on 'BLOOM', and the glossy pop instrumentals on 'HERTZ' all combine to showcase the best of what the band is made of. 'MUSIC' is probably the weakest moment on the album. It's delightful in the way that it feels like a hug, but it's almost... It's the only track I don't think is perfect or near perfect.
