Hydrocolloids can be used on clean wounds as well as wounds that need debridement. When placed on a wound with necrotic tissue, autolytic debridement can occur (Rivera & Wu, 2011). These dressings come in the form of gel, paste, and wafers. Fang R., Dorlac W.C., Flaherty S.F. Feasibility of negative pressure wound therapy during intercontinental aero medical evacuation of combat casualties. Orgill D.W., Austen W.G., Butler C.E. Guidelines for treatment of complex chest wounds with negative pressure wound therapy. It allows the dressing pores to come in direct contact with the wound, eliminating the need for additional silver dressing layers that may influence negative pressure transduction and granulation tissue formation.
Therefore intermittent mode of VAC is more effective as compared to continuous mode. Foam dressings are indicated for use as primary or secondary dressings for minimally to heavily exudating partial- and full-thickness wounds such as stage II-IV pressure ulcers, surgical wounds and dermal ulcers. Depending on the product, foam dressings may be used on infected wounds, tunneling wounds, or cavity wounds.

The battery life for the WoundPro® wound vac is approximately 36 hours. Yes, we offer both long- and short-term wound vac rentals to hospice teams across the country. Please contact us for more information about wound vac rentals, delivery options and assistance with insurance coverage. Allows treatment of two wound sites on the same patient with a single device. Provides a barrier to bacterial penetration using silver ions activated by moisture delivered in the dressing which can help reduce infection.
WoundPro® foam dressing comes in sizes ranging from 3.25” x 4” x 1” to 6.75” x 8.75” x 1”. All dressings used in our WoundPro® Kits consist of medical-grade foam that has been tested for biocompatibility and is certified to comply with the ISO protocol. The Pensar WoundPro Uniflow Y connector allows for two separate sites to be connected to one device. The WoundPro® wound vac’s industry-leading pump design easily supports two wound sites at continuous, intermittent or variable intermittent pressures from 40 mmhg to 200 mmhg. The price of a wound vac depends upon a number of factors, including the type of device, as well as the number of dressing kits and/or canisters. In some cases, a family member or a caregiver can be trained to change your dressing.

One study looked at the use of VAC to heal a patient’s ulcer. Using VAC healed the ulcer in 6 weeks at half the cost of reconstructive surgery. A review of studies looked at the effects of VAC in women with obesity who were at a high risk for developing wound complications.
Product Description
Just as with human patients, negative pressure wound therapy can be used successfully to treat acute and complex wounds in pets including dogs, cats, horses and many other animals. So what happened to the 85-year-old patient mentioned in the opening of this article? Because of the patient's unclean environment, a silver alginate was chosen for his venous ulcers. The silver helped with the infection, and a composite gauze dressing was used as a secondary dressing. Nursing visits for this patient were scheduled at two times per week and all the dressings were contained, which helped with the patient's environment and healing.
Wounds demand complex care, thinking and, at times, may need to be referred to a wound care expert. There are many types of wound care products available for wound care management. The challenge for many clinicians is knowing what type of dressing is appropriate for the various types of wounds. Clinicians provide an important connection in the physician–patient relationship in home care and especially in wound therapy. Statistics from various resources report that many patients in home healthcare settings have wounds. These vary from surgical, pressure, neuropathic, trauma, stasis, and venous wounds.
Silver dressings are the largest category of antimicrobial dressings. They have antimicrobial activity against an extensive range of aerobic, anaerobic, gram-negative, and gram-positive bacteria, yeast, fungi, and viruses . The different forms of silver are supplied as alginates, foams, gauzes, hydrocolloids, contact layers, combinations with hydrogels, creams, powders, and collagens. Dressing can be left on up to 7 days; do remove if exudate come through secondary dressing .
The reticulated, open pore foam allows exudate to be removed and enables the dressing to conform to the wound bed, providing the foam-tissue interface. This design allows for increased distribution of negative pressure across the wound bed and stimulates tissue formation granulation. Gauze was one of the original mediums used for negative pressure wound therapy, and is commonly referred to as a Chariker-Jeter dressing. Gauze is a proven, effective medium which retains a high level of moisture in the wound bed when used in conjunction with NPWT. Cork Medical is a medical device and support surface company specializing in negative pressure wound therapy, mattresses, overlays and air cushions to aid in the treatment and prevention of wounds. Here a wound vacuum is attached to a wound that goes down to the muscular layer.
